Mycotoxins and Ozone treatments
Very few people know about mycotoxins. But, they know about mold and mold spores. Mycotoxins are also produced by mold as they break down their host. Mycotoxin are deemed dangerous because they are so extremely small that they can directly enter the bloodstream through the lungs.
Experts have reported more than 400 mycotoxins, most of which are cytotoxic, meaning they are capable of killing living cells. But, pay attention to the important part of the name "toxins". Unlike mold spores, which are a health concern, that may collect in the nasal areas and lungs. Mycotoxins are as small as 0.01 microns. Mold spores are usually about 1-20 microns in size. By comparison, a hair is about 100 microns thick. So, 5-10 microns would equal the size of a hair. It would take 10,000 mycotoxins to equal the thickness of a hair.
NIH reports: Although there are not many reports on the use of ozone against filamentous fungi or their mycotoxins, promising results have been reported. With a short half-time, at neutral pH and ambient temperature, ozone is able to inactivate microorganisms and decompose their toxic metabolites, leaving no traces of ozone in the treated commodity.
Mycotoxins are volatile organic compounds that are similar in structure to ketones, aldehydes, alcohols, and aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons. These fungal chemicals can be acutely or chronically toxic depending on the kind and amount of toxin exposure. These fungal toxins are lipid-soluble and thus can be stored in organs and tissue producing mold toxicity and serious health effects. These effects can include skin and pulmonary infections. Mold toxicity can affect the liver, kidneys, and nervous system. Mycotoxins with ensuing mold toxicity can suppress the immune system and can be carcinogenic.
In short, ozone is a treatment solution that kills mold, damages mold spores, and can neutralize the dangerous mycotoxins. Mold remediation may require more than an ozone treatment as any water leak must the solved and any damaged goods removed. However, it seems smart for mold remediation services to add pre and post-remediation treatments using both ozone and HEPA air scrubbers.
Aflatoxin is a similar and dangerous threat that is related to corn and grains affected by mold. When consumed, the health impact is liver damage or liver cancer. Mycotoxins are not only a health threat, but actually can store in the cells of the body causing a growing toxicity threat. For this reason, it is unwise to stay in a mold-impacted building for a protracted period of time
Mycotoxins are produced by some, not all, types of mold. Aspergillum, penicillium, Fusarium, and black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) which can be found in many parts of the country. To be safe, have any new home, condo, or apartment purchase; do a mold spore test to be assured that you do not endanger your family. Mold sickness problems usually talk months to appear, which is too late to change your mind about the purchase.
