Ozone in Nature

Ozone in Nature

For those who are distracted by the naysayers on the Internet, it helps to know that ozone is literally a beneficial part of nature. Consider these very important ways that ozone is found in nature.

The Ozone Layer: Most people know about the ozone layer at the stratospheric level around the earth. This layer is formed when sunlight, primarily ultraviolet light, hits oxygen molecules in the upper atmosphere. The good news is that the absorption of UV light reduces excess UV rays on each of us.

Lightning Storms: We are told that a good lightning storm produces 200 tons of ozone. This accounts for the “Fresh Smell” after a lighting storm.

Some complain that ozone at ground level adds to pollution. Actually, that is a partial truth. Ozone formed in the sunlight of the day is trying to fight pollution in the air. However, the combination of ozone may make pollution worse as this process works.

The good news is that ozone goes away as the sun goes down to return again the next day for fight for a healthier world. But, don’t blame ozone. Reduce the pollution, and the ozone issue will not be as serious a concern.
